Arthritic joint pain is a very common condition, particularly as we age. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It is a long-term condition that causes the gradual breakdown of soft tissue in certain joints, such as knees, hips and fingers. The Ministry of Health tells us that we’re more likely to get osteoarthritis as we grow older and it’s particularly common in the over 65 age group.
If your joints are swollen and painful you could well be experiencing osteoarthritis which can affect the entire area including bone, cartilage, ligaments and muscles. Symptoms include pain, stiffness, and swelling, while treatment will focus on reducing pain and disability through lifestyle changes (diet, exercise), physical and occupational therapies, medication, and (in some cases) surgery.
About one in ten adult New Zealanders is affected by the condition.
Osteoarthritis and Hemp Seed Oil
According to The World Health Organisation musculoskeletal disorders represent a global threat to healthy ageing and are a leading cause of disability largely due to pain. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and grew by 75 per cent from 1990 to 2013 and this rise is predicted to continue.
The main characteristics of joint pain and/or arthritis are swelling and inflammation which can be debilitating and seem to gradually take a toll on one’s overall health and wellbeing over time.
This is where hemp seed oil comes into the picture. Research data suggests hemp seed oil is an excellent anti-inflammatory agent offered to us by Mother Nature. As such it contributes none of the potential side effects of prescription medications which are widely used for arthritic conditions.
Hemp seed oil is plant-based, full of protein and has the perfect balance of essential fatty acids. Because we can’t make essential fatty acids we need to source them from our diets and sometimes it can be difficult to get the balance right. Hemp seed oil packages omega 6 and omega 3 up neatly and delivers them in a perfect ratio of 3:1.
Hemp seed oil really is the perfect plant-based food that most importantly is anti-inflammatory; which is at the crux of most illnesses and diseases. If we can reduce inflammation we are reducing our risk of the majority of modern-day chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.
What is GLA & Why Does It Help Arthritis?
GLA’s (Gamma Linolenic Acid) anti-inflammatory properties have been anecdotally shown to reduce inflammation in the body. Hemp Farm hemp seed oil also contains an impressive percentage – up to 5% – of pure gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). This is rare to find in a seed oil.
An optimal essential omega fatty acid profile including GLA are important factors for our bodies, especially joint health, which is why hemp seed oil can be beneficial for people struggling with the pain of arthritis. More clinical research is needed, however we have received lots of customer feedback detailing how hemp seed oil has given them much relief when added to their diets.
Hemp seed oil is a precious gift from nature with a plethora of reported positive side effects for humans including improved pain levels, mobility, immunity, mood and overall health. It is so easy to integrate into your daily regimen so we encourage you to use it daily!
