Hemp Seed Oil for Dogs

Missy Eating Hemp

We are proud ambassadors of Kiwi grown hemp seed oil and also huge animal lovers! So naturally it was to our absolute delight when we discovered that our ‘fur-baby’ loves hemp as much as we do!

Hemp oil comes from the seeds of the hemp plant and is rich in nutrients like fatty acids, antioxidants and phospholipids. It contains ZERO THC and is a healthy product for all humans and animals.

Here are 5 great reasons to drizzle hemp seed oil on your dogs’ dinner daily:

1. Skin allergies

If your dog suffers from skin allergies, it’s important to find a lasting solution. Many of the over-the-counter drugs for treating skin allergies also have long term effects on your pet. Hemp seed oil is miraculous for your dog’s skin and coat! It prevents skin disorders such as dry nose, dog acne, dog eczema, dog rash and dog dandruff. If your dog has an existing skin condition then hemp seed oil will help soothe itchy dog skin such as dry noses and itchy paws. It will also help your pets coat shine!

2. Inflammation

Chronic inflammation is responsible for multiple health issues in dogs, including arthritis, liver or kidney disease, cancer, pain, and inflammatory bowel disease among other problems. Using hemp seed oil alleviates inflammation and also treats chronic inflammation.

We are aware that Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is very common in dogs. Research suggests hemp seed oil is a great ingredient for superb maintenance of your pets gut health.  Hemp seed oil possesses antibiotic properties which restore normal gut motility. The Essential Fatty Acids (Omega 3, 6 and 9) imbedded in hemp seed oil also promotes a healthy microbiome in the intestine, which is fundamental to good gut and bowel health.

3. Arthritis

Hemp seed oil works by reducing inflammation and decreasing nerve-related pain. It is fantastic for joint pain and arthritis.

Studies have shown that the GLA (Gamma Linolenic Acid) in hemp seed oil, can control inflammation and reduce arthritic symptoms by up to 25%! This is great for older dogs living with arthritis or maybe just experiencing pain and stiffness in the body.

4. Antioxidants for Immune Support

Active hemp seed oil aids the immune system and supports healthy organs and heart health. Containing vitamin E and vitamin A (Carotene), these antioxidants support the immune system by fighting damage from free radicals.

Your dog may be exposed to free radicals daily as their bodies absorb toxins from pollution, pesticides, processed foods, vaccines and any drugs that may have taken for illness. These can be damaging to your dog’s cells, DNA and overall health.

Hemp seed oil also contains the minerals zinc, iron, calcium, magnesium, and a variety of amazing antioxidants. All of these work together to support a dogs immune systems, eye health, heart health, and cognitive and cardiovascular function.

5. Diet

Hemp seeds provide humans and pets with a nearly perfect 3:1 ratio of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids, which makes it one of the most naturally balanced ways to add omegas to you pets diet. We like to add a generous dollop of hemp seed oil to our dog’s bowl of biscuits to help assist with absorption and digestion. Unlike soy, nuts and other legumes, hemp does NOT contain trypsin (enzyme) inhibitors and oligosaccharides, which can cause stomach and gastric upsets.

When we prepare meat for our dog we also add hemp seed oil before serving – but please note this is only in red meat-based meals. If your dog is eating a poultry-based diet, adding hemp oil may cause an imbalance in its diet. Chicken is already quite high in polyunsaturated fats and linoleic acid.

So we’ve established that giving your dog hemp oil whenever you give it red meat is an excellent boost to its health.

How much should you serve daily? Our research shows that you should add a teaspoon to every 450g of food.
