The Hemp Keto Diet

Both hemp and the ketogenic diet are recent lifestyle trends that are populating general wellness conversations in 2020. As we become more educated about optimising our health, different ways of eating are being discussed and it is now clear that hemp is a fantastic complement to a ketogenic lifestyle.

It is the marriage of good fats, zero carbohydrates and high fibre that makes hemp such a perfect ingredient to the ketogenic lifestyle. 28g of hemp seeds contains 9g of protein, 12g of fat and 2g of fibre. Hemp has an ideal 3-1 ratio of omega 6 to omega 3, plus 9 and it also contains all 20 amino acids and all 9 of the essential amino acids that our bodies can’t produce.

Sugar, which is excluded from the ketogenic diet, is considered a big contributor to heart issues and so by eliminating sugar and putting more emphasis into good fats and proteins such as hemp – the end result will be improved blood pressure and decreased obesity. Hemp seed and oil are rich with gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) thus, making it excellent for heart health and any inflammatory condition.

So what type of keto dishes can hemp play an important role in? So we asked our local fans.

Nicoló Lorenzato is a WGC hemp oil fan, who likes to make his keto dessert with berries, nuts, coconut yogurt and a splash of hemp seed oil for a great final touch. He says, “just one spoonful is enough for that extra nutty flavour in the dish.” Nicolo also says he likes to have it raw, simply straight from the bottle as a supplement in the morning before work. “It is rich in healthy fats, protein, omega 3s and 6s which are perfect for a person following the ketogenic diet.”

One of our favourite cafés on Waiheke, Timbuktu, has a hemp seed tabouli salad on its rotation and the recipe is as follows;

1 cup shelled hemp hearts

2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice

1/4 cup waiheke green cross hemp oil

1/2 cup finely chopped parsley

1/4 cup finely chopped mint

1/4 cup diced spring onion

1/2 cup diced cherry tomato

1/2 cup diced cucumber

1/4 cup diced kalamata olives

250g fresh baby spinach

 

Seasoning to taste

Mix in large bowl.  Eat some now.  Save some for later.
