Why use liquid extracts?

There are numerous ways in which herbal supplements can be delivered, from capsules and tablets to powders and teas to tinctures and oils… the list could go on. And now with the ever increasing desire to use herbal supplements as alternative and complementary medicine, people want to find the best and most efficient way to gain all of the health benefits from these supplements.

Since the success of any herbal supplement depends on how active their ingredients are when you consume them, it is important that the state in which you ingest them best preserves and captures the most active constituents.

Here at Waiheke Green Cross we are proud of our double liquid extracts procured from our partners in Byron Bay, as we believe it is one of the best ways to access all the benefits that these beautiful mushrooms have to provide.

But first, what is a liquid extract? Also known as a tincture, it is a supplement that has been prepared in such a way that the active constituents, in this case, of the mushroom are suspended in a liquid medium. Liquid extracts can be made with water or water and alcohol. The addition of alcohol allows constituents of the mushroom which are not water soluble to be released and accessible in the extract and that is why we prefer a double extraction process, which allows us to access all the mushroom goodness.

Liquid extracts are able to hold and preserve (for up to 5+ years!) the many bioactive compounds that are released during the extraction process. Furthermore, as you are ingesting a liquid, the body doesn’t need to digest anything and therefore allowing the functional properties of the mushroom to be absorbed straight into the system. For example liquid extracts can take 1-5 minutes to absorb, unlike capsule and tablets which can take up to 20-30 minutes to just break down, before the body can even start to absorb the active ingredients.

It has been tested that the body can utilise up to 98% of liquid extracts, compared to the 39-53% of capsules! This is because (now we’re going to get a little bit science-y) for the cells of our body to receive any kind of nutrients, it needs to be suspended in a liquid and therefore typically, the more liquid based a supplement becomes, the faster and more fully the bioactive constituents will assimilate and take action within the body. Thus making liquid extracts one of the most bio-available and therapeutically beneficial supplements on the market!

Thanks for this post, helps clarify in my mind the difference between liquid extracts vs the powder variation perfectly. It was something I previously found confusing but this makes a lot of sense, thank you.

You are welcome. We have often been asked . . .”why is there alcohol in this extract?” So it was good to be able to clarify the benefit of a liquid extraction done this way. Certainly it is the best medium for ‘optimal efficacy!’
